Insider % ownership is back ! (and # of shares)

Hello,

We (finally) rebuilt insider % ownership. In the process we also added insider # shares owned. The factors are populated since around end of 2004. At the beginning they appear to be yearly. Since 2009 we were able to generate weekly values. We also re-organized the reference a bit and you will find them here: FUNDAMENTALS->OTHER FUNDAMENTALS->INSIDER

Insider%Own
Insider#Own

Below see the point-in-time fundamental chart of Microsoft for Insider%Own. I would like to point out two events.

  1. The first, labelled G, and it’s a drop of % ownership from around 2.2% ->1.4%. This one was due to Bill Gates selling a large chunk.

  2. The second, labelled B, is the removal of Steve Ballmer 330M shares. We don’t think he sold all his shares. We believe that Ballmer shares were removed from the “insider total” since he’s no longer an employee (or on the board) and owns less than 5%. SO he’s just a regular investor. Therefore, beware of the pitfalls when using this data. What seems like a huge drop confidence by insiders is nothing more that a labeling event.

Let us know your feedback and questions.

More MSFT fun with Gates & Ballmer.

1st chart is # shares owned by each. Ballmer in 05 had around 400M shares and sold a big chunk in 2010. Gates has been selling for years and had over 1B shares in 05.

Ballmer became largest insider around 2014.

Notice how Ballmer % ownership went up even if his # shares is flat due to company buybacks (2nd chart)

NOTE: this data is courtesy of S&P . There’s no way to generate individual insider shares in P123 since we are only licensed to show aggregates.

wow, this is very, very big, going to use it!

Thanks Marco, good news.

Am I missing it or is there a way to use a change in insider ownership as a screen/factor?

Hi Marco

I receive an error when rebalancing this portfolio. It seems to be the ranking system that is causing the error.
https://www.portfolio123.com/portf_rebalance.jsp?portid=1445443

In ‘InsOwnerSh%’-> Error near ‘InsOwnerSh%’: Invalid command ‘InsOwnerSh%’

In the meantime, I replaced InsOwnerSh% with Insider%Own. As the old function does not seem to work anymore, I cannot compare results between old and new.
Maybe you can elaborate more what the changes were and how it affects results.

Did you automatically replace InsOwnerSh% with Insider%Own across P123? If so, in my case it was not replaced.
And is the new Insider%Own identical to the previous InsOwnerSh%?

Thanks

Whotookmynickname,

InsOwnerSh% was previously NA.

We renamed the factor to be a bit more consistent with Inst%Own. But the naming is still a bit messy with these insider/institutional factors. We also regret using special characters since it makes copy/past harder.

Also… we made the deprecated InsOwnerSh% a “synonym” for Insider%Own. This way there should be no errors in your old systems.

Marco, I just wanted to say thanks for putting this data out there. Appreciated.
