COMING NEXT WEEK: a new Portfolio123 !

Dear All,

We are putting the final touches to our new, redesigned Portfolio123. Besides being much prettier and friendly, it also has some new features.

Here’s a quick list:

  • More intuitive, better layout
  • More friendly to iPads and smaller screens
  • A redesigned help system with many step-by-step tutorials for newbies
  • New logo too!

The new site will go live sometime in the middle of next week. We suggest you login to the new site to familiarize yourself with the new layout.

The new site is accessible here:

http://65.84.1.52

You will get a security warning from your browser when you try to login, simply ignore it. The new site is linked to the production database, so any changes you make are for real.

Hope you find our new site agreeable and let us know of any issues. You can post any issues in the forums or email us at info@portfolio123.com or paul@portfolio123.com

Here’s a screen shot of the new home page.

Cheers.

Hi Marco,
thanks for the pretty forthcoming upgrade. Just one quick question. in the current system under portfolio There is a “bookmark” function Which seems to be missing in the new site. Is it possible to add it?

Many thanks

SH

Thanks Marco . Looks like a lot of effort went into it. Will try it soon!

Looks nice in Firefox. Thanks.

Can you put My Ports and My Sims at the top level on the home page since that is what I go to reguarly?

This is a big step forward, at least with usability.

See no reason to split links to My and P123 Rankings and Screens in the top toolbar as both linked to the same screen.

My main problem - some pages don’t fit small screen resolutions (1024x768) in width (see attached) nevertheless there are a lot of free white space around. Using Chrome an IE. Same problem was with an old design, hoping this could be fixed with new one.

Pages don’t fit:
R2G - model page (very bad)
R2G - Categories
Trading - What is Trade? (all the section)
Portfolio - Recent Trans
Portfolio - Search Holdings
Data - Industries & Sectors (very bad and a lot of white space around)
Data - Macro (Chart page totally messed (see attached), not the list of charts)
Data - Research (Chart, PIT Chart, Panels)
Community - Forum threads (not lists, see attached)
Help - Solutions section
Help - Pricing section
Settings - Restriction List

All the listings pages with items tree on the left, like Portfolios, Books, Screens, Rankings etc, is OK.

Hi,

First: Thanks ! Great overall look and nice gathering of previously of too disparate menus.

Suggestions :

  • decrease the number of clicks to do in order to go directly to a sub menu :
Example : you want to go to PIT chart. Go to Data/research (this is fast) then wait a few seconds then you can click on PIT chart. Then wait a few seconds then you have it !

  • change in Help/“rule reference” with “rule definitions”. Because naturally I would tend to go first to glossary and missed the rules reference.

  • larger display width for stock panels section (see image) (again why having to spend time clicking just to display fully the content ?).

  • in the screener : with large computer screen, the “Add free form rule” is really too much in the right part of the screen (one has to move the mouse too much for that button that is often used imho). Would it be possible to put it more to the left (see image)?
I know there is an option to decrease screen width but I would like to keep the results in full width !

  • in Firefox : in help/solutions : the bottom parts is not displayed well (see image).

Overall I like the look.

Would like Ranks to be its own ‘tab’ at top.

For Reverse Engineering, please allow me to select the End Date and then the number of weeks, which will calculate the Start Date. End Date should be in reverse chronological order with most recent date available as the default, and 20 periods as the default. There is a LOT more that can be done with this feature and I hope to see it improved in the future.

Please improve the functionality in the performance graphs in Ranks to allow the user to explore the data dynamically, with sliding time windows and ability to select which decile groups to compare, ability to have top-bottom spread overlaid on chart.

I would like to see the ability to define ‘time periods’ such as “Tech Crash”, “2009 Recession”, “Quantitative Easing” and then have these as a pull down to review simulation performance outputs.

Thank you all for feed back - the main goal besides improved appearence is more intuitive and effective layout so your feedback helps a lot.

shtcwl - the bookmarks will be back soon - it’ll be a unified bookmark section (not just for ports/sims)

tkp - The My/P123 menu links do go the same page but load a different set of items. we want all pages to fit 1024x768 resolution with no HORIZONTAL scrollbar. Having pages with large data tables and lots of text trying to eliminate vertical scrolling is a battle we’ll never win. The R2G section also has a large redesign in the pipeline - but most of the pages you listed will have to have some vertical scrolling.

selti - the menus are tricky - if we keep adding links to each tool the submenus get too many options and you start to have an out of control menu like the old design. The stock pages default width is set to make smaller resolutions useful (see above). I think we can make some adjustments to the full width screener display. And we’ll fix the help/solutions page - thanks.

Shaun - should be able improve the reverse engineer page. A ‘drill-down’ into the rank results is a planned future enhancement (not right away though - sorry).

thanks all
ted

tedb - I am generally talking about places with no width content. As I mentioned almost everywhere there are a plenty of blank space around. There a lot of places there horizontal scroll bar appear just to scroll 10-20 pixels of blank space. In some places ironically CONTENT is fitting and only blank space is overboard.

Nice appearance, Marco. Having been with P123 for 11 years, its always nice to see an updated look.

However, I second the request by another member to have the shortcuts to My Sims, My Ports, etc, placed at the top of the home screen, as is on the previous iteration of the P123 home screen. Thanks.

Marco, upon going to the new site I see there is still just “manual entry” for transactions. When will we have the option for downloads from our broker?

Thank you

OP, no.

Once we launch next week we’ll start new projects including the transaction import.

Ok, thanks. But now I have you committed to this in public

New projects like Europe?

Hi Marco,

Good new look!

Once you implement the new R2G model look into the website, can you please provide a similar display for life portfolios/ simulations? Some crucial statistcs like minimum bottom (20%) liquidity and Trading Costs / Curr Mkt Value are currently only available for R2Gs, not for ports.

Thanks

Hi Marco & Team,

super, Looks great, thank you!!!
Regards
Andreas

For the upcoming site it seems we are still missing documentation on any of the new features. Is this correct? I am interested in learning series functionality.

Marco:

“Once we launch next week we’ll start new projects”.

Does that mean European data will come soon?

My first impressions:

I like:
The new drop down menu system. It makes browsing to a specific page much faster.
Menu items organized by topic.
The unobtrusive server status icon on the top of every page.

I don’t like:
The longer process to manually rebalance a series of portfolios. With the current web interface there is a dropdown menu to switch from one port to another.
ALL CAPS in the menus.
The new Portfolio123 logo. It looks like a complicated rubik’s cube that is very hard to solve. (is that a symbol of the site’s ease of use?)

Menu organization:
Personally, the organization of the menus is fine because I am familiar with the system. But I can see where it would be intimidating to a newcomer. The terms for the various tools are very technical and unfamiliar to 99% of the population. If the goal is to simplify the interface for users (as opposed to designers) then there is still a way to go.

Here is one way to organize the menu:
Trading
Subcategories: R2G User, Ongoing DIY Portfolios, Book (i.e. combinations), Recent transactions and holdings, Auto Trade

Designing
Simulator, R2G Designer

Tools
RS, Custom Formulas, Custom Lists, Exposure Lists, Custom Universes, Custom Reports (Data items to show in screener), Optimizer

Research
Screener (list of stocks), Individual stocks & ETFs, Macro (Macro Indicators, Fed Model, Industry Overviews)

Chaim, you can switch to a different port while staying on the same page (like the rebalance page). Click on the vertical bar on the left to expand the portfolio folders and you can pick a different one. We’ll try to make that vertical bar more obvious.

We have another version of the logo with just solid cube faces. It’s nice too. The main goal was to get the 1-2-3 part readable.

SZ, we will be adding more tutorials soon. The tutorial platform was a big effort because it can do a lot more than what it does now, and will evolve. I don’t want to get off topic but we are trying to create an incentive for user contributions.

Thanks
