Folio simulations: Slippage--a question Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

Hi
I have been running simulations of FolioFN's world of stocks since I am considering using their brokerage service. I like the idea of being able to have a portfolio for a fixed cost per month with sufficient trade possibilities. However, since the trades only occur twice a day, and not at the open or close, the slippage from simultions may be greater than simply buying at the open.

Has anyone trading FOLIOFN stocks observed a major slippage from simulations? Is a 0.5% slippage appropriate for FOLIOFN or should it be higher. I do not use a commision.

thanks
Jim

Jim,
I tried to get a good answer for you by downloading my FolioFN transaction history and using a program to retrieve the historic quotes so that I could calculate the slippage. But the transaction history is really, really wrong. Some of the buy dates are off by several years! I'm going to have to email FolioFn and see whats up. If they fix it, I'll get the info to you.

Without any numbers to back it up, I can tell you that my Folio account has gotten good returns. My Folio acct is the one that I based my Knowledge Base article on. I dont think that waiting until 10am on Monday for the first window trade has hurt the performance. In some of my other accounts I have missed some big gains because I try to set my buy price below market and wait for a little dip in price - which never comes and of course that stock is up 10% that day. Folio is also a big time saver since I can put my trade in on the weekend and Im done where my other accounts require me to watch the open on Monday and place individual orders. The only downside to Folio is if you have a large account I would be careful when placing window (market) orders for thinnly traded stocks. And be careful on days where volume is very light like the day before big holidays, etc.
