I just received a solicitation to subscribe to as newsletter "Low priced Stocks" written by Marc Gerstein. Apparently this is related to a coopoeration with Forbes. Just wanted to make sure, this is not a scam. Marc: Would you care to tell us a little bit more about this newsletter of yours? Thanks. It is not a scam. It's real. As suggested by the title, Forbes Low-Priced Stock Report, it focuses on stocks priced under $3. There is no official minimum price, but given that I do aim to focus on trade-able stocks, you can assume, as a practical matter, that the price will usually be above $1 (NASDAQ makes an issue of this; AMEX and NYSE have other size requirements, but most of the stocks will be NASDAQ issues). There is, on p123, a pre-defined "stocks under $3" screen. That was a starting point. The model used for the newsletter is a newer one. I had been acquainted with the Forbes.com folks from back in my days at Reuters (actually, even before that: at Multex), and we had at times discussed various ideas for working together; the head of Forbes Digital is very much aware of an interested in the screening/ranking. Finally, about a year ago, we hit on the idea of a low-priced stocks newsletter based on our belief that this is an area that fascinates many investors, but often leads to trouble, whether from playing ill-informed hunches, gossip, manipulation, etc. So we decided to try to bring some big-time analysis to what has often been something of a wild-west corner of the market. There are two components of the newsletter both of which spring from a Top 40 listing created from my screen and the QVGM ranking system that is up on p123. One approach is purely model-based. Here, I treat the top 15 as a Model Portfolio that can be traded in its entirety. Details and backtest data are available as special reports in the Low Priced Stock Report section of the Forbes Newsletter web site. The other aspect is analytic judgment, where I turn on my old-time Value Line hat. There, I draw on any stock in the Top 40 that I think has long-term home-run potential (and I continue to monitor these even after they rise above $3 and, hence, leave the newsletter universe. Consistent with the way I assessed stocks when at Value Line, I take a big-picture focus. I'm just as happy as anyone else to see a company beat guidance, but this is not an obsession. I try to find credible reasons why I think the company could be significantly bigger, and the stock significantly, higher, a few years down the road. Anyway, I hope this gives you a sense of what it's about, and reassures you that it is not a scam, |

Is there a way to opt out of such promotional material? I get enough junk mail. |

There's a way to turn off all emails from My123->MyAccount->Settings, but this turns off all emails, including weekly reports. ---------------------------------------- Portfolio123 Staff |
