I have perpetuated a problem Reply to this Post

Community,

A number of months ago I was studying the effects of Buy Rules, and I wanted to see the effect of forcing the Sim to sell all stocks and rebalance every week.

To do this I simply changed one of my sell rules: Stop Loss PctFromHi < -10

To; Stop Loss PctFromHi < 10 , removing the minus sign.

Since the % from the high could never be 10% greater than the high, the Sim sold all the stocks every week, just like I wanted.

However, Since the results had a high annual gain of 226%, and the Sim was public, many members have copied the Sim not noticing the minus sign was missing from the Stop Loss formula. As soon as I noticed it was being copied I deleted it.

Over the last few months I have found dozens of Community Sims and Ports with almost identical Buy and Sell Rules, including the Stop Loss with the missing minus sign.

An example is: ‘Sim Copy of GARP Top Ranked SmCap’ by dipaolom, run just yesterday. This Sim has the same Buy and Sell Rules that my sim did 3 or 4 months ago.

The best way you can notice something is wrong is by a review of the realized gains under transactions, you will see every stock was held for only 7 days.

I don't know any other way to inform everyone than to post it here.

Sorry,
Dennysad

Denny,

I'll add that bit of education to the many other bits that I have gleaned from you and some of the other more active members here. You guys add so much to the overall experience and potential of P123--I feel a bit guilty sometimes silently picking apart what you've done to learn how to exploit the site a bit more.

I can understand why you might feel some concern about how your stuff is being used (based on the credibility you have generated, it seems like your stuff was the basis for just about all of the simulations here until recently). As I examine your (and others') contributions here and on the Yahoo site, I am always hopeful that those concerns will not compel you to hide the sims and commentary that are now visible, or to stop communicating in the open with other users.

Thanks for the notice on what you saw. It is in no way your responsibility to to protect those of us whose learning curve is, shall we say, a bit shallower, but I'm always appreciative of your community minded approach.

Like most lurkers, I am working hard to get to the point that I can add substantively to the overall conversation.

Thanks again.

Marc in Melbourne,

Thanks for the vote of confidence!
Although I am an Engineer by trade, I'm a Teacher at heart.
I have always enjoyed helping others learn, but the main reason I try to contribute to this knowledge base is that everyone knows that two heads are better than one.
Here at P123 if we all try to contribute, 100 heads are a lot better than two, and we all benefit!
