You think oil is going to rise. You decide against an ETF that holds oil stocks prices of the shares in the portfolio may also be influenced by market or corporate developments separate and apart from the actual price of oil, such as reserve replacement, upstream versus downstream considerations and so forth. A commodity ETF seems preferable; the exposure is more pure. As oil rises, you feel good . . . until you look at your oil ETF and see that it went down! In fact, you did not buy an ETF that holds oil. You bought an ETF that holds oil futures, and futures have lives of their own. FULL ARTICLE.
