N/As (Not Applicable ) and Their Effect on Rank Output Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

I'd like more detail on how NAs affect rank output and was hoping someone could give more information on it. If due to a calculation a NA is the result how does that affect the rankings? Will the stock being calculated still get included in the overall rank distribution? Where in the distribution will it be ranked?

I didn't think about it that much previously but have recently come to the conclusion that it may mislead me if not kept in mind. Is there a way to disable this or to set a parameter that will automatically change the result to a zero or 100?

Sterling,

The stocks that have a function with an N/A for that function will be assigned a rank value for that function that is equal to the lowest (or worst) real rank value for all stocks.

For example, you can see these values by going to any Ranking System and select "Ranks" in the left column. On the next page in the “Output” section of the box, next to “Columns”, select “Include Composite & Factor Ranks”, then select “Get”. You will get a table of tickers with the highest ranked stocks at the top. Look through the table and you will find some white values instead of green, yellow, orange, or red. The white values are the assigned values that are equal to the lowest real value for that factor. Scan down a column with a white value and you will see that all the white values in the column are the same number. If you go to the last page of the table you will see a LOT of the white assigned values.

This approach was selected by the community a number of years ago to try to not penalize a stock excessively due to a N/A value by assigning it a rank of zero. You can see that although this approach will reduce the overall rank of a stock, if the Ranking System has a lot of factors, 1 N/A will not greatly reduce the overall rank.

Denny cool
