I'm left stupefied every time an article is written after a crisis about how statistically rare the event was. Forget we had Taleb being lionized for pretty much stating the obvious in his book Fooled by Randomness. During summer 2007 we had the quants going on about how the price movements were a multi-sigma event. Before that we had the giant Nasdaq plunge of 2000-2002, the Argentinian default, and commodities rout. Before that we had the Russian default and LTCM debacle. Before that the Asian Crisis, the Mexican Crisis, the Japanese implosion, 1987's Black Friday and we haven't even gotten to the 1970s. I don't know how anyone can consider dramatic price movements to be unusual. I cannot help but believe some of these supposedly smart researchers and financial modelers are suffering from some severe myopia or that market commentators are feeding us an incredible amount of crap. |
