What is out of sample data and when or why would it be used?

"Out of sample" data is price and fundamental information not used in the creation of a trading strategy. Inherently, all real money trading is "out of sample". As a result, you may choose to select a time period to develop and optimise your system, but not use all the data available, so that you have a period against which you can test it on hitherto "unseen" data, just like you would in real life. If it fails miserably, then you know your process is flawed, usually caused by curve fitting.
