Robert,

You may want to examine Scottrade due to their $500 min and no fee to open/maintain account. They offer a number of interesting American Century Mutual Funds for a $250 min per fund. I have not found any broker that offers a lower minimum. I have found their service to be top notch. Like them a lot.

I have never used them, but you may want to check out Sharebuilder. You may be elgible for a rebate if you join thru Costco.

How about Dogs of the Dow? Relatively low risk/simple to understand...

I think you can see, using only $500 as a starting point, just how fast you can arrive at zero after commissions and slippage. My suggestion is to use a market tracker mutual fund and add to it (dollar average) every month until you build a decent amount to invest and then start using P123.

Thanks!

Hi,
There was a previous discussion re. how to teach children about stocks here

Zecco.com has a $2000 minimum but it also has $0 commissions for the first 10 trades/month. I've been trading a small account there since the summer and I like it.

There's an article here about a balanced starter mutual fund portfolio. Could do something similar with ETF's also.
