Strange rebalance behavior Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

I had a problem just now rebalancing this port:

http://www.portfolio123.com/port_summary.jsp?portid=290090

I pressed Get Recommendations once, and it told me to buy ASUR. Then I hit Commit. and got message, "Portfolio Rebalanced". Then just to double check I hit Get Recommendations again, and instead of saying "No new recommendations at this time", it told me to Sell ASUR and buy INXI.

I was able to manually delete the transactions and rebalance and replicated the behavior.

Why is ASUR being bought and then sold on same day?

Normally once Get Recommendations and then Commit, it says nothing to do when hit Get Recommendations a 2nd time.

Thank you.

Kurt

I've seen this in the past, also. Look at ASUR vs. your sell rules. If you were already holding ASUR, would it get sold because of a sell rule?

Hi Brian,

Thank you. You are right. Indeed there is a sell rule that gets satisfied. It is sell rule, EMA(50) < EMA(100), which when I plot those 2 EMA's on Yahoo Finance charts, I see in case of ASUR is true hence would satisfy the Sell Rule and trigger a sell.

(I note that I did try first to get the values of EMA(50) directly using the P123 screener, but I couldn't figure a way to get the values produced by them or other computed functions to display...which is why I went to Yahoo Finance. I could only get the pre-defined Reuters factors to display in the screener when I set Column Factors to be Screen Factors. Maybe I am doing something wrong...)

This makes me realize folliowing:

1) The logic behind executing Get Recommendations apparently does not care if the Portfolio Rebalance is current as of today. It apparently still executes the Sell rules when hit Get Recommendations again. (Not sure if Buy rule logic is rechecked) That is good to know as it gives us a bit more flexibility of checking things.

2) One needs to be very careful to think about how to set up Sell Rules so they don't prematurely trip. I am now wondering if other sell rules I have are on edge of being tripped but don't show up right away. I am wondering how one more systematically sets up sell rules and checks sell rules against this in Simulator enviroment. In this particular sell rule case I am thinking perhaps changing the rule to be EMA(50) < EMA(100) And NoDays>50 might be better way to go.

3) The usefuleness of the recently added Copy to Screen command that Marco provided, which was very handy for this analysis.

That is subtle observation you made about the Sell Rule action Brian. Thank you again for pointing this out.
