confused   Averages for stock universes Reply to this Post

Just signed up for P123 after Reuters shut down PowerScreener 3.0 the other day without notice.
I was able to recreate all my screens and portfolios but have one problem. Some of the criteria I use for my screens is based upon averages of all of the roughly 5660 stocks that trade on the major US exchanges. I can't figure out how to find these averages. For example, how do I find the average market cap for a universe of stocks? Or how about TTM Free Cash Flow? Any suggestions? Thanks.

As I recall PowerScreener showed the several statistics for the results, such as Min,Max,Avg, etc. Is this what you mean?

I'm not sure you can figure out the averages with P123. There is a function called FRank you can use in screens or buy/sell rules that may help you. FRank allows you to determine where a stock sits relative to the stock universe for a particular stock factor. For example, if you use the rule

FRank("stock factor",0,1) > 50

the stock would only meet the criteria if it's stock factor was higher than the mid point of the stock universe.

Hope that helps.

Thanks to Marco and Steve for your replies.

Marco, yes, you're correct, that is what I was referring to.
Steve, thanks but FRank won't work for me since I need the data first.

But I've been playing around with it and think I may have just figured out a way:
1) I created a new screen and started with a rule to create the universe I wanted (AMEX, NASDAQ, and NYSE stocks).
2) Then I added rules to screen for the data points I wanted, but made sure that my rules did not eliminate any companies. For example, for "Market Cap" I entered "MktCap!=0". I did this for all the data points I wanted, clicking the ''Sub Totals'' button after each new rule to make sure that no companies were eliminated. "....!+0" only works for some, so I had to experiment.
So in the end I still had the same 5650 companies that comprise the AMEX, NASDAQ, and NYSE universe.
3) Next I went to the "Column Set" drop-down menu and selected "Screen Factors".
4) Then I hit the "Run" button to get the results.
5) On the results page I went to the "Display" drop-down menu and selected "All Rows".
6) Then I downloaded the results to Excel.
7) Once in Excel I was able to easily Insert a Function to get the average for each column I needed (ex. Mkt Cap, TTM Sales, etc.).

As of today's data the average market cap for that universe of stocks is $5,075.95M; average TTM Sales is $3,512.15M; etc.

It's an inelegant solution but I think it will work. I think I can also do all this at the Bronze level, too, so I figure I'll downgrade from Gold before my free trial ends.

Steven, you can simplify. Use this to show the columns you want:

1 Or MktCap Or PEG Or ...etc...

You don't need to select "All Rows". The download to excel always downloads all the results.
